Spring Things

It’s been a busy March around Casa Mishappenings.  I’m not much for basketball, but I feel like my March has given a whole new meaning to March Madness!

To start the month, The Engineer and I took our first real, adult vacation!!  We spent a few days in Orlando catching a couple spring training games.  We also did some regular tourist things…..beers at Coco Beach, the Kennedy Space Center, and of course….

……THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER!!!  We totally bought too many butter beers and I got an overpriced Ravenclaw sweatshirt, but I don’t even care!  Pro tip about Universal Studios….if you’re on a budget and don’t want to pay for express passes, I would seriously suggest going through the rides as single riders.  Basically you take an alternative track to the front of the lines and they use you as a space filler.  If you don’t go single rider, and don’t splurge for the express passes, you’ll spend a lot of time in lines.  We spent at least 90 minutes waiting in line at Gringott’s bank because we didn’t wait the extra 10 minutes for the single rider line to reopen….big mistake!  This won’t work out well if you’re a family with kids probably, but was fine for The Engineer and I.  We always ended up in the same car or group anyway….just maybe not sitting right next to each other.

The only major buzzkills of the trip were our flights, the hotel, and the total lack of anything not touristy to do in Orlando.  It felt like we couldn’t even find a nice place to go to dinner that wasn’t just a chain restaurant.  All I really wanted was some good fish, or even an amazeballs plate of fish tacos, and we couldn’t even find that between the Red Lobsters and the Joe’s Crab Shacks…..  I did however get a Mickey Mouse ice cream head like we got as kids when we went to Disney as a family….so all hope wasn’t lost!

Tastes like childhood!

Our hotel, the Days Inn Kissimmee formerly known as the Copacobana Motor Inn, was less than stellar.  It was a hot deal off Hotwire.com so we didn’t know the name prior to booking.  I will say, it was clean and you could tell they are slowly trying to make improvements……but doors that close and don’t seem like a strong breeze might rip it outta the door frame would have maybe been my remold starting point.  It was about as good as you’d picture a $35 a night hotel being.  The desk had two different chairs, there were patched holes in the walls, and overall it just wasn’t great.  We debated leaving for a different hotel, but we spent such little time there it seemed like more work to try and get our money back and move.  We did however pack everything up and put it in the rental car everyday because you could never really tell if the door was going to stay locked from the outside…..it “locked” from the inside, but again lock is relative.  If someone really wanted in our room….they would have gotten in.

We flew Allegiant because it leaves from home and offers a direct flight to Orlando.  I’m not sure I would ever fly them again.  We paid for and booked everything up front, but with Allegiant you have to pay for specific seats.  So I paid for two seats together for both flights.  We didn’t get the seats we paid for on the way to Florida, and I had to pay extra on the way home to move The Engineer and I back into two seats together.  They also overbooked the flight down to Orlando and were trying to convince people to drive to Omaha and take a different flight…..again…..we’ve all paid for specific seats on the plane….so why is this even happening?!  We didn’t take the offer as it would have essentially burned a whole day of our vacation being at home and driving to Omaha….plus the issue of getting our car back from the Omaha airport.

plane

How flying makes me feel….least favorite activity!

air

People watching at baggage claim….the best!

All in all I’m making the trip sound horrible, but it was actually a really good time!  It would have only been better if it had been a wee bit warmer, but then we would have come home as cripsy fried bacon probably….so it’s just as well.  It was warm enough if you were in the sun and out of the wind to feel hot.  In the shade or out in the wind on the coast it was chilly enough that we wanted long sleeves, but I refused to wear anything other than shorts!  It wasn’t too cold to drink beer outside so I’ll take that as a win.  Speaking of wins, there was no relationship feuding over the results of the baseball games.  The Phillies and Braves each won a game, so all was fair in love and baseball!

Another big March event was that The Engineer has now officially moved it!  As part of our new “double income household” life, The Engineer declared that next vacation we aren’t getting the cheapest hotel and skipping the express passes…..”We need those passes!”  You don’t need the passes…..just follow the pro tip it took us all day to learn and go single rider all the way….the hotel however…..will be upgraded on our next vacation!  Although, if we can survive the horrible hotel and his somewhat whiplash-y driving in the very zippy rental car for a week….we can probably survive just about anything together!

Plumber’s Crack, See Through Butts, and Muffin Top

tumblr_mc0910jv931rx9tvto1_500.jpg

No pants……no crack problems!

Now that I’ve snagged you in with that clever click-bait title, let’s get to the point!

Workout pants…….you put a ton of faith in them, and expect them to stay where they belong.  There’s nothing worse than going for a run and constantly having to hike up your capris, or feeling like your booty is slipping out of your leggings while you’re squatting.

I’ve got a pretty small waist in proportion to my booty, so finding good pants that stay put….workout or otherwise….has always been the bane of my existence.  Ideally, I need pants that are large butts but with a medium waist.  Medium butts make me a bit nervous about being that girl at the gym whose pants are always see through…..no one wants to be that girl.  I’ve tried several brands and styles and recently had a breakthrough!  I thought I’d review and rank them for you.  I can’t be the only one on this struggle bus.

(Mis)Happenings proud presents—–

Yoga Pants: A Review in 7 Parts

  1. Beyond Yoga  These are my absolute new favorite!  I love a good pair of high waisted pants.  They are just so smoothing and keep everything in place.  Plus, because the waist is so high you don’t have to worry about your booty hanging out.  What makes these highest on my list is the lining in the waist.  They have an inner cotton lining which I think helps keep them tight and snug.  It also seems to help the waist from rolling down at all.  Nothing is worse than having your high waisted pants roll down and giving you the muffin top to end all muffin tops.  I purchased a large, but the waist definitely feels snug on me like a medium typically would fit.  Plus side…..the print I own is currently on sale, so snap them up in a hurry!
  2. K-Deer  The first pair of “high end” yoga pants I purchased was a pair of K-Deer capris.  They were actually a “desperate times calls for desperate measures” spur of the moment purchase when I realized the pair of capris I had on had a hole when I arrived at class.  I love that they are high waisted and very stretchy, however sometimes the waist band does roll on me.  I wear a large, and don’t have many issues with the pants moving around on me.  I will say, if you’re tall and want a mid-calf level capri, you should order the sneaker length.  I have a pair and they hit sort mid to low calf on me, but I do have extra gangly, long legs.  If you’re into bright, festive colors and patterns in your workout gear you really don’t need to search anymore.
  3. Teeki   I love Teeki prints….like seriously all the prints!!!!  Some people….cough cough The Engineer cough cough…..might tell you they are ugly, but you just namaste and walk away!  Teeki leggings are made from recycled materials so you can help the environment while you find your center.  They are very thin, which I love for all of my hot classes, however until I get sweaty enough to sort of stick the waist to me, it does fall and sag.  There is no elastic in the waist band, which is good for the muffin top, not so good for cardio.  I own two pairs, both in a large.  I did try on a medium, however because the prints are only on the outside of the leggings, squats in the medium made the white lining really show through.  I’m smart enough to know it isn’t my white girl butt showing through, but I don’t need to be causing that level of scandal during my classes.
  4. Alo Yoga  I have a pair of the Goddess style leggings.  I love them because they are extra long in the leg and ruched up the outsides.  Like the rest of my favorite leggings….they are of course high waisted!!  They have a good amount of stretch, but don’t just feel like spandex.  I have a size medium.  They are a little squeezey in the waist….mostly at the top of the waist band on the seam.  However, they feel alright through the leg and booty on me.  I’ve never tried on a large, but I would image they would feel too big on me.
The photos are me in a pair of Goddess leggings from a photoshoot at my gym.  Pictures by Aime Hansen Photography, and styling by Form Fitness Boutique!
  5. Athleta  When I was looking for a pair of nice, black leggings to wear both to classes and just out and about it my life, I found a nice pair at Athleta.  They have side pockets for my cell phone when I’m out and about, zippers at the ankles that make them easy to wear with shoes or ankle booties, and the fabric feels the most cotton-y of all my yoga pants, if that’s something you like in your workout wear.  I own two different pairs of Athleta leggings, both high waisted size large.  The only thing I don’t like about them is the sizing.  The waists on both feel a size too big, however the booty on both feels like it fits well.  It isn’t a huge deal, I rarely wear them to work out…..mostly I wear them with over sized sweaters or hoodies lounging around or at work.
  6. Jiva  I have one pair….and I want to like them I just can’t really!  They run so small!  Also, they don’t feel like they have much stretch.  My gym carries them and I’m always tempted to try another pair, but there are just so many others I like better.  Realistically, they aren’t horrible, they are just tight.  I mostly wear them to barre class because that rarely involves deep squats.  Deep squats aren’t something that ever seems like a good idea in super tight pants.  The one plus side is that even though they are tight, they aren’t see through.  But, when I say they are tight I mean that they are even hard to pull on over your feet because the ankle holes are so small.  I have a large and they feel a bit small all over…..but they don’t look like they are squeezing me so it’s not all bad.
  7. Fabletics  When I first started getting really serious about working out, Fabletics was the company I turned to for my pants.  They are very affordable, the styles update every month, and there are cuts and colors for everyone.  I don’t own any high waisted styles from them, all of my pairs are older than their new lines.  I have maybe half a dozen pairs of varying styles and prints, and they aren’t they most consistent company.  Some fabrics feel like they make the pants run small, some fabrics aren’t as stretchy as others…..overall the pairs I like I really like, and the pairs I didn’t like I really didn’t like.  The pants that don’t stretch are constantly sliding down.  I only wear them for rowing or biking, anything else is just annoying because I’m constantly having to fidget with them.  It’s obviously hard to know what you’re getting online, so it always felt like a bit of a crap shoot…..or a box of chocolates….either way you never really know what you’re gonna get.

Old Stores and New Favorites

Being gone from home lately has given me the chance to shop at some fun places we don’t have at home.  Lush, which I can order online but that’s less fun because you can’t smell through your computer, and Trader Joe’s are a couple of my favorite shopping destinations when I go to “the big city”.

Since I went to a actual Lush store twice the other week…..maybe we will start there!  My primary motivation at Lush the first time down in Omaha was getting a fun variety of bath time things for Lil B’s birthday present.  It was a super fast power shopping trip because we were on the way to The Engineer’s PE celebration dinner with his family.  Actually, his sister just dropped me off and circled the parking lot…..ain’t nobody have time to find parking at Village Point!  However, they had just released a new body wash scent, and I was super excited to try it.  Mostly because my favorite scent, Lord of Misrule, is a seasonal scent and smells more like fall and winter than it does spring and summer.  Enter…..Plum Rain!

lushgel

It’s fruity, but in a dark, adult sorta way.  That probably doesn’t make sense, but it doesn’t smell like childish tutti fruity gum.  Not that there is in anyway anything wrong with that tutti fruity Fruit Stripe gum.  Actually, there is something wrong…..it’s nearly impossible to find anymore, and the flavor doesn’t last as long as I want……however I’m getting side tracked.  I find that this fragrance, compared to other Lush body washes I’ve tried, lasts much longer.  I don’t ever remember smelling Lord of Misrule or The Olive Branch on myself post shower, but Plum Rain has a nice light amount of scent that seems to cling to me.  I think this scent has been available for some time in the UK, so I’m glad I can finally get my hands on it.  I think Plum Rain and Lord of Misrule, fingers crossed they bring it back again, will be my all the time go to scents.

The second trip to Lush was more of a casual shopping stop.  A coworker and I were in Minneapolis for a conference, we just got there a little early so we could shop!  She has two little girls who love the Lush bubble bars, so we stopped in so she could restock.  While wandering around the store I found a new body scrub and figured I’d give it a try.

I’ve tried the Ocean Salt scrub before, and just thought a change would be nice.  However, I’m not in love with the Rub Rub Rub scent.  I got a little bit of scent overload in the store, but thought that I would like this.  Once I got home, it’s a little too flowery for my liking.  I mean, it’s not bad, just not something I’d choose again.  I defiantly find the Ocean Salt scent to be more refreshing and neutral.  However, I do like that Rub Rub Rub has some bubble to it.  Scrub and body wash in one is a hard combo to beat.  Honestly, if they offered it in another scent I would be all about trying it.

Big city shopping trip number two was Trader Joe’s.  I feel like people who have Trader Joe’s near them don’t appreciate them the way they should….they are amazeballs!  The only down side is that I’m always traveling when I’m at one, so I can’t really explore the frozen or fresh sections of the store.  All that untapped potential!!

Since I have to mostly purchase dry goods…..I stick mostly to snackies.

pretzel

So in looking for a picture of my peanut butter pretzels I discovered I just grabbed the wrong color bag.  THE RED BAG IS UNSALTED!  Not that unsalted, peanut butter pretzels are the worst thing, but they certainly aren’t the best thing either.  They will definitely leave you feeling like they are missing something…..SALT…..but are a good snack to have around anyway.  I don’t love peanut butter, and these aren’t over powering…..although next time I will for sure be grabbing the BLUE BAG!

Since The Engineer was home watching the tiny, furry, terrorist, I thought he could use a couple yummy presents.  Since he pretty much eats what I eat, it wasn’t too hard coming up with some must have items.

I had previously grabbed a BBQ sauce here in town that’s a little too on the hot side for The Engineer.  We haven’t tried the Kentucky bourbon sauce yet, but reading over the ingredients doesn’t lead one to believe that it will be super hot.  We made some chicken, pepper, and pineapple hobo grill pouches a couple weeks ago and it should go well with that when we make them again.  The ginger beer was a fairly obvious choice.  However, in googling ways to reign in our budgets I was curious about the difference between ginger beer and ginger ale.  Turns out one is brewed and one is not, but all my research seemed to say that if you weren’t buying sorta artisanal, hipster, still cloudy in the bottle ginger beer…..it probably isn’t all that different from ginger ale.  All that is to say that I bought some ginger ale to make mules with….and he hated it.  So, since the Trader Joe’s bottles said “brewed” and it looked a little cloudy I figured it was worth trying.  I haven’t tried it, but The Engineer did.  I’m not sure that he was wowed enough by it for us to stock pile it, but it was probably a nice change from the diet stuff I usually keep in the house.

vanilla-cold-brew-coffee

Since I was going to be spending long days sitting at a conference with limited and generally crappy coffee, I grabbed a couple of these little guys to get me through the morning.  Plus side, they are small cans so they tucked right into my wristlet.  Down side, they are small…and a small coffee is never super ideal.  Some coffee is always better than no coffee though!

RX-Bar Title Image.jpg

My last Trader Joe’s purchase was a couple RX bars.  Basically, they are a quick and easy meal or snack bar, but they are are free from any extra junk.  My coworker likes them, and started eating them because most of the flavors are Whole 30 compliant.  So, I decided to give a couple a shot.  It’s always good to have a quick and easy grab and go something laying around the house.  I tried the Coconut Chocolate and the Chocolate Sea Salt.  I was anticipating that the Chocolate Sea Salt would be my least favorite, but I was wrong.  I’m generally not a huge fan of chocolate, but those I would definitely purchase again.  I’m on the fence about the coconut.  It wasn’t good…..but it also wasn’t bad.  The main win about buying these at Trader Joe’s is that they are WAY CHEAPER than I can purchase them here in town.  I believe that the bars were $1.60ish a piece at Joe’s……here at my local grocery store they are ALMOST $4!!!.  Get your crap together Hyvee!!!!

I also picked up a couple staples……the english toffee and the roasted tomatillo and mango salsa…..so good!  I grab them every time I go.  Hopefully, now that I’m headed down to the Omaha area more often with The Engineer, I’ll be able to hit up Lush and Trader Joe’s more often and keep trying some fun new things.  Life is too short to not try new things!

Trader Joe’s Mini Haul

I spent the first part of the week in Omaha at the annual Fuel Ethanol Laboratory Conference.  Before we got down to the business of wasting time and drinking coffee at the conference, we shopped.  There’s a rather extensive outlet mall outside of Omaha that I had never been to, so that was a bit of an adventure in shopping and savings.  After the outlet mall, we all headed to Trader Joe’s, which is maybe one of my favorite places to wander and shop.  Sometime’s it’s just nice to buy things you don’t have the opportunity to buy at home, and to try some fun and random new things.

Full disclosure, these aren’t my photos….because I didn’t think of doing this until after I had already torn through some of my purchases.  I can’t help it….I get excited about things!

Every once in awhile, I like lemon curd on toast.  So, I finally decided I should buy some for the house!  I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m sure it’s good.  Honestly, I’ve never bought anything from Joe’s that I didn’t like.

english-toffee-1-of-5

This is possibly my favorite Trader Joe’s treat.  Tastes almost exactly like what Momma MisHappenings makes for Christmas except that we use pecans instead of the almonds that coat these little beauties.  Plus side, after you eat the large toffee chunks, you’re left with delightful crumbles of chocolate, toffee, and almonds that are great on ice cream, granola, a fruit crisp…..honestly the possibilities are endlessly delicious!

I don’t ever particularly like chocolate, but these little morsels of caffeine just hit the spot!

I LOVE BOXWOOD!

Boxwood’s might honestly be my favorite plant.  They smell good, they are a nice little shrubbery, and I pretty much think they are the best things ever!  So, I of course had to buy a wreath to hang on my gate.  I think my coworkers maybe thought I was insane, but I really don’t care.  Nothing gets in the way of me and my festiveness!!

roasted-tomatillo-mango-salsa

This was a new purchase, but I’m glad I threw it into the mix.  A good amount of tangy and spicy.  It’s also a good texture.  I don’t like a super soupy salsa, but I also don’t love having to eat it like a meal.  I’m not sure that it really tastes all that mango-y to me.  It’s definitely more of a traditional salsa than a fruit salsa.

I have yet to figure out how to make myself a proper iced coffee at home.  Usually, I just resort to pouring cold coffee that I probably brewed the day before over ice and calling it good.  This coffee concentrate makes a much better iced coffee.  I like mixing it with coconut milk for a slightly favored morning caffeine-y treat!

Itrader-joes-lightly-sweetened-coconut-strips

These did not survive the trip back from Omaha…..I got the bored hotel munchies.  Oopsy! Honestly, there isn’t much to say about this.  If you like coconut you really can’t go wrong with these!

I also got a few other things that I’m not at liberty to discuss at this time.  With that said, back to the Christmas knitting I go!

Weekend Fix #3 and New Favs

Last Thursday I got my 3rd Stitch Fix box.  I somehow missed the email from them saying that my box was being styled and asking for any input, so this box was a total mystery!  I had no idea what was going to arrive.  It was an all day monsoon on Thursday when the package got delivered.  Luckily, I happened to have my storm door unlocked, which isn’t normal for me.  I would have had to wait all weekend for my pieces to dry out before I would have been able to try them on!

img_6954

I can’t even tell you how long I have wanted a plaid, pencil skirt!  Ugh….I so wanted to like this, and I kind of did.  However, it’s a tiny bit too small, and I think I’d prefer a slightly longer style.  For the price, $88, I just couldn’t keep it because it wasn’t totally perfect.

img_6938

I’ve finally decided that I like my booty and hourglass hips in a pencil skirt….which is a huge win for me, but that pucker situation though…..not worth the money!

img_6955

Again, I really wanted to like these, but there was just too much not quite right about them to justify the price.  While they were a flattering cut and actually long enough for me, they gap slightly in the back because I’m too curvy for them.  They were fairly high waisted on me, which isn’t my favorite feeling for everyday wear, and I’m not sure how much use I would get out of “trouser cut” jeans.  I’m just not that fancy.  I would just as soon take the money, $88, I would have spent on keeping these, and spend it on regular jeans that fit me better.

img_6957

There’s nothing wrong with these earrings, other than the price.  I like them just fine, I just don’t feel like there are worth $38.  I feel like I could find a similar style to this at stores in town for significantly less money.

img_6958

Fairly nondescript, black turtle neck.  I’ve never been a fan of turtle necks….I’ve had a couple through my life that I liked, but generally they are never my go to items.  It fit, and the sleeves were long enough…..but it was just too blah to keep for $64.

img_6959

Cute and comfy long sleeve t-shirt is the item I’m keeping.  After my $20 styling credit, the shirt costs $34.  It has a cute pink zipper detail all up the back, and the sleeves are long enough for me!

Little back zipper!

On to a couple of my favorite new makeup products!  A girl can never have too much makeup!!!

23bf1270-80ac-0133-90c0-0e17bac22e39

I’m not sure if these are new…but they are new to me, and I love them!  I’ve seen some mixed reviews, but I have three….two full sized and one deluxe sample, and I love them all!  They dry down super matte, but I don’t find them drying.  They mostly last all day on me even eating and drinking totally as normal.  Even if they wear a little, I find it super easy to just touch up any faded areas.  AND…..they smell like mint and go on with a slight tingle….love it!

The lip paint colors I own are…..

Rave — Greigey Brown

Namaste — Pinky Nude (This is pink on me, but my lips have a lot of color in them naturally.  It might be lighter “nude” on other people)

Hangry — Berry (Deluxe sample size)

urban-decay-ozone-247-glide-on-lip-pencil-review1

If you’re going to wear fancy lips, you need to make sure they stay looking fresh.  I love this lipliner!  It’s clear so it works with any color you own, and it keeps your lips crisp all day.  Without liner, my oily skin causes lip products to bleed out on me all the time.  This liner keeps everything in place for all day wear!
